Who Am I in Vedanta Teachings

By Victor M Fontane

Vedanta is the philosophical system found in The Upanishads and are the highest teachings of the Hindu Vedas and contains insights of what we are, who we are and what reality is. Knowing and understanding these insights solve the very problem of suffering. Death, meaningless and all problems are solved if we know what we are and what reality we experience is. In one sentence, “That thou art” or “tat tvam asi” in Sanskrit. Means, there is an Absolute Reality in the Universe and that we are this absolute reality as a manifestation of it called Brahman in the Upanishads. In its central teachings explain that can be experienced and must be experienced in order to overcome suffering. This pure consciousness or pure existence, in Sanskrit “Sat” of pure being, “Chit” which means awareness or consciousness itself and “Ananda” which means happiness. So, Swami Vivekananda explained all this as ultimate reality.

Sat: truth, absolute being or existence - that which is enduring and unchanging.

Chit: consciousness, understanding and comprehension.
