From my own experience, after entering my spiritual path I decided to study all institutional religions and spiritual teachings and philosophy as well. I spent many years studying the Christian Bible, Jewish Torah, Islam Quran, Hindu Vedas, Buddhism and others. The reason why is because I found lots of similarities between them and differences as well. The most important finding was that some of them has a similar believe system, some follow and worship a teacher but not the teachings and their differences are just man made.
My approach was to know everything, compare and make synthesis of the teachings to get closer to the ultimate reality.
Some give you a punish and reward system, some promise a wonder land or place if you follow their rules, some treat you like a child worshiping a highest being that needs to be asked for favors through prayers and some give the system and practices for you to free yourself from suffering and death and achieve your highest potential to unify with the source, some more technical others more emotional.
I follow Buddhism as they have a system to acquire that freedom and perfection.
However, is important to get the knowledge to be able to make a better decision.
