The Vedanta Method Explained

By Victor M Fontane

The process of teaching in Vedanta goes through three phases: hearing, reflecting and meditating.

Hearing: The central two truth of Vedanta are taught by the teachers and you listen to them attentively with respect you get the idea what is Vedanta telling you, that you are the Absolute, what we consider God in different religions. The Christian mystic of medieval Germany Meister Eckhart said: “The ground of my soul and the ground of God are one and the same, what we are in reality and what God is in reality are one in the same thing. And that is what the Upanishads says. Then we become aware of this great teaching, But then we have many questions and don’t understand rationally.

Then comes the next stage.

Reflecting: Questioning, arguing until at the end of this phase you realize you’ve got clarity, you know what Vedanta say and now you understand it. But again you feel that has not yet transform your life, you haven’t overcome or transcend suffering, then it comes the third stage.

Meditation: Vedantic meditation where what you have heard, what you have understood and you’re convinced now stay with it, the truth.
