The Second Vulture

By Victor M Fontane

In the 1990s, a photo of a vulture waiting for a starving girl to die to feast on her body was widely circulated. This photo was taken during the 1993 famine in Sudan by Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist who later won the Pulitzer Prize for this incredible shot. However, while Kevin Carter savored his feat and was celebrated on the world's main news channels and networks for such exceptional photographic ability, he lived only a few months to enjoy his supposed achievement and fame. He later became depressed and committed suicide. Kevin Carter's depression began when during an interview on a phone show someone called and asked him what had happened to the girl and he simply replied: “I didn't wait to find out after this shot because I had a flight to catch." Then the caller said: "I tell you, there were two vultures that day, one had the camera." For this his, constant thinking of that statement later drove him into depression and he ultimately committed suicide. Kevin Carter might still have been alive today and even more famous if he had picked up the girl and taken her to the United Nations feeding center.
