The Purpose Behind Idol Worship in Hindu Traditions

By Victor M Fontane

In this verse, Bhagwan says that it is very difficult for an embodied being like you and me to worship him in his unmanifest form. The realized person, the sthitaprajna sees Divinity or God in every being, human or animal, the animate or inanimate. But for ordinary people like you and me, it is easier to focus our thoughts and devotion on something visible, be it a stone, wood or clay.

Psychologists say that a person needs an idol (picture or image) or a symbol to evoke faith and emotion. By worshiping the idol of the God (Aaradhya) one establishes a psychological relationship with him. In this idol he wants to see the infinite power and wants to develop his religious spirit. By seeing the idol of the Lord, his qualities are remembered in the heart, and it is easy to concentrate the mind. Once the idol of the Lord is engraved in the heart, then there is no need for any idol.
