Mahabharat, which was narrated by Sage Ved Vyasa and written by Ganesha was first named as “Jaya”. Then Vyasa’s disciple Vaisampayana narrated this story to King Janamejaya (Pariskshit’s son and Abhimanyu’s grandson) after which it was named “Vijaya”.

The later it was named as “Bharata” and sage Saunaka and other sages of Naimisaranya forest added extra shlokas with teachings and message behind the events of Mahābhārata and it was finally named as “Mahabharata”.
