Kalki Avatar and Maitreya Buddha Legend

By Victor M Fontane

Kalki Avatar – The Remover of Darkness

The Kalki Avatar would be the tenth and final incarnation of Lord Vishnu that would appear at the end of the present Kali Yuga. At the end of the Kali Yuga, when dharma would reach the nadir point, then to restore the righteousness in the world, Lord Vishnu would incarnate as Kalki. He is often depicted as mounted on a white flying white horse named Devdatta and wielding a blazing sword in his right hand.

The Meaning of the Name Kalki:

The name Kalki most likely originated from the Sanksrit word “Kalka,” which means foulness or filth. Therefore, the meaning of the name Kalki is “the destroyer of filth (darkness)”.

The Origin of the Kalki Avatar:

Kalki avatar is not mentioned in the Vedas. The epithet “Kalmallkinam”, meaning “Brilliant Remover Of Darkness,” is found in the Vedic Literature for Rudra (later Shiva), which has been interpreted to be “Forerunner Of Kalki”. Kalki avatar is mentioned in many Hindu texts, including but not limited to the Mahabharata, Vishnu Purana, Matsya Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Kalki Purana, and Bhagavata Purana.

The Mission of Kalki’s Life:

Per the Kalki Purana, the main aim of Kalki’s life would be to kill Kali and establish Satya Yuga. Kalki Avatar would set out to conquer the entire world and in the course of conquest, would defeat many sinful kings who are representatives of Kali.

Maitreya Buddha Maitreya Buddha is regarded as the future Buddha of this world in Buddhist eschatology. As the 5th and final Buddha of the current kalpa, Maitreya's teachings will be aimed at reinstating the dharma, a vital concept in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. In all branches of Buddhism, he is viewed as the direct successor of Gautama Buddha. In some Buddhist literature, such as the Amitabha Sutra and the Lotus Sutra, he is referred to as Ajita. Despite many religious figures and spiritual leaders claiming to be Maitreya throughout history, all Buddhists firmly agree that these were false claims, indicating that Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, is yet to appear.

According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya is a bodhisattva who is prophesied to appear on Earth, achieve complete Enlightenment, and teach the Dharma. According to scriptures, Maitreya's teachings will be similar to those of Gautama Buddha (also known as Śākyamuni Buddha). The arrival of Maitreya is prophesied to occur during an era when the teachings of Gautama Buddha have been forgotten by most of the terrestrial world. Maitreya, in Buddhist tradition, presently resides in Tushita heaven. Maitreya is the earliest bodhisattva around whom a cult developed and is mentioned in scriptures from the 3rd century CE. Maitreya has also been employed in a millenarian role by many non-Buddhist religions in the past, such as Theosophy, the White Lotus, as well as by modern new religious movements, such as Yiguandao. Ancient teachings indicate that Kali Yuga started just over 5,000 years ago in 3102 BCE when Krishna left our planet Earth, and it will last another 427,000 years. After Kali Yuga, the yuga cycle begins again with Satya Yuga, the golden age. The transition takes place with the assistance of the Kalki Avatara, who rids the Earth of the hordes of beast-like human beings who have lost all sense of their humanness. Then a small handful of sages and ascetic kings emerge from their hermitages to repopulate the Earth and commence Satya Yuga again. Samael Aun Weor (1917–1977) stated in The Aquarian Message that "the Maitreya Buddha is the Kalki Avatar of the New Age." The Kalkian Avatar and Maitreya Buddha, he claimed, are the same "White Rider" of the Book of Revelation. However, Maithreya Buddha is depicted as much more powerful than the Gauthama Buddha but He can Never be compared with Kalki.

  1. Kalki is a lay person. Buddha is a monastic.

  2. Kalki is warrior and uses violence. But as the name itself suggests the main quality of the Maithreya Buddha is compassion.

  3. Kalki is a Kshatreya. Maithreya Buddha is born in the Brahmin caste.

  4. Kalki is said to occurr in order to eradicate adharma or evil. Buddha’s do not occur to destroy evil but to spread the Dharma or the path to NIbbana.

  5. However it is said in Buddhist scriptures that before a Buddha occurs, Kamavachara Devas or the deities from the six heavens (But not from the Brahma realms which are higher and are called Roopaavacara and arupavachara devas) descend to human world and inform the humans of the coming auspicious event. Kalki seems to be more like such a person who acts the role of John the Baptist in the Bible, and prepares the world for the occurrence of a Buddha by destroying the evil people, practices and notions prevalent in that era so that it is easier for the coming Buddha to spread his message in peace and in compassion.
