How Spiritually Evolved are We?

By Jose N Garcia, Vedic Astrologer

In modern times, especially in the western part of the world, three types of spiritual teachings have developed and are widely used to try to explain reality and experiences existing outside of the actual visible world.

These are the ones that come from:

1. Literature from authentic and traditional sources. Ancient teachings given by spiritual teachers and seers, philosophical, corroborable in all traditions and that follow a rigor of logic, structure and practice. It is important to clarify this difference between philosophical schools and religions. This is so since modernly a hybrid between the two has been created.

2. Literature that has taken elements and components from traditional schools but has mixed them with their own interpretations and religious components.

3. Completely speculative literature product of readings or misinterpretations, divine inspirations, communications with beings who have dictated information, etc. and that they vary a lot from the teachings of the traditional schools, who have an epistemological system on the ultimate nature verifiable in all.

The latter fall into the trap of self-deception.

This is produced in three different ways:

1. The so-called lonely students. Those who read, study and identify with the theory of books without having a teacher or guide in the process of teaching and growth that can keep the ego under control, even refuse to have it, they create the fantasy of what they understand what they are. They understand that intellectual knowledge equals spiritual mastery.

2. Those who, through psychic experiences or abilities, confuse them with spiritual development or evolution. They believe that having psychic abilities is evidence of spiritual evolution.

3. Those misled. When certain instructors or teachers convince them that they are apostles or spirits occupying someone's body and that they are divine.

Jung defined inflation: Jung defined it as being seized by archetypal energy resulting in “a puffed up attitude, loss of free will, delusion, and enthusiasm for good and evil alike.” Inflation is more than a “swelled head” because the influx of unconscious contents leads to identification with god-like powers.

The best way to corroborate the condition of people who claim to be highly evolved is through the gunas (quality, peculiarity, attribute, or tendency) or the way matter is classified in the Universe.

1. Sattva (consciousness) - goodness, calmness, harmonious.

2. Tamas (stability) - ignorance, inertness, laziness.

3. Rajas (activity) - passion, activity, movement.

The person who manifests Sattva is the most highly evolved.
