About Meditation

By Victor M Fontane

Both meditation and yoga are spiritual practices that are being borrowed from the Far East in the last two centuries, but which generally stray from the true purpose taught by the old masters. These practices really, if done correctly and with the right motivation firstly, can lead you on your spiritual path and advance your practice to achieve your highest human potential or enlightenment and secondly control, pacify and balance your mind creating a more peaceful and wise life.

In the case of meditation, we encounter a first obstacle as the mind is so active and full of thoughts that it behaves like a monkey. It is difficult to tame the monkey unless he has or achieves the correct procedure or system and is not able to stop the mind but to develop with practice the ability to concentrate on one thing at a time. Therefore, you will reach the point between two thoughts and that is where your true self and divinity resides. The longer you stay there, the faster you can achieve samadhi. Since we humans cannot focus on one thing at a time, even for a minute, it takes a lot of effort, time and discipline to do so. The state of mind during meditation is compared to the state of deep sleep in which we are immersed in a void.
